The Mission and History

Fellowship of the Spirit Mid-Atlantic was started as the result of the experience of an A.A. member living in Richmond, Virginia, who attended the annual Colorado Fellowship of the Spirit Conference. FOTS is dedicated to carrying the message of A,A,, as set forth in the book Alcoholics Anonymous, to both alcoholics and to those who are either members of alcoholic families or those who are in emotional relationships with alcoholics.

The first FOTS Mid-Atlantic Conference was held in May 2005 in Natural Bridge, Virginia, with more than 200 people attending.  The second FOTSMA conference, in June 2006, was also in Natural Bridge.

We moved to the Richmond, Virginia, area for the third FOTSMA conference, on Memorial Day weekend, We loved the venue, and held our fourth, fifth and sixth conferences at The Crossings.

The FOTSMA Conference went into hiatus for 2011, after putting on five great Memorial Day weekend events that were not fully self-supporting.

  • We put on a Three Legacies Workshop in February 2011 in the Richmond suburb of Bon Air with our North Carolina friends Tom I. and Steve M.
  • For 2012, Tom and Juanita U. from New Mexico led a workshop at Forest Hill Presbyterian Church. Juanita, an al-Anon member, and Tom, an A.A. member, were speakers at our first FOTSMA conference.
  • In June 2013, Mike L. from Indianapolis led an intimate retreat for 40 people at Richmond Hill.
  • In November 2014, Polly P. from Jacksonville and Steve L. from Nashville shared how the 12 Steps have transformed their lives.
  • In September 2015, Gary B. from Indianapolis and Bob O. from Centennial, Colorado shared their combined 90+ years of experience in sobriety on "growing in understanding and effectiveness."
  • In October 2016, Jerry E. from Manhattan, KS and Jerry W. from Apex, NC led a fall retreat in Richmond.
  • In September 2017, we rented two luxury houses facing the ocean in Sandbridge, VA for a retreat led by Mike L. from Indianapolis and Brian P. from Dallas.
